In the world today many more people know about diabetes then ever before. Unfortunately, people have the wrong idea of diabetes and how it affects you. Yes, diabetes can be deadly only if the person doesn't take care of it. This in the long run can cause problems with the person's body and how it functions. Because of these complications that diabetes can cause, many people give diabetes a bad reputation. This causes the people that have diabetes or know someone that has diabetes to become worried about the outcomes of diabetes and the effects it can have on themselves or the person they know. With these myths that they have towards diabetes it makes it look not too positive.
Although, if you have an uplifting attitude towards this disease than it doesn't seem as bad as the world makes it out to be. In a world with such negativity there are some positive things to remember when it comes to diabetes.
Three things to remember:
1) You are not alone!
When you're diagnosed with diabetes it is a new world that you're thrown into. It's something you've never experienced before and a factor that will be with you for the rest of your life.
A thing to remember is there are other people out there feeling and dealing with the same disease as you are. 346 million people in this world have diabetes and live daily with it. You are not the only one that is living with this everyday. So don't become shy and ashamed about your disease, open up about it! Odds are the person you are talking to about it either has the disease or knows of someone that does. This will help you have a support group of people that know exactly what your going through. You'll have something to relate to with the people around you. Just remember you are not the only person in the world living with diabetes.
2) Don't let it stop you!
Diabetes does not cause your life and the daily activities you do to come to a halt. It just becomes part of your daily living. Diabetes is not that big of a problem to cause you to stop doing what you love. If you love to go to the movies and eat all the popcorn you can with your friends, then do it. Just remember to take insulin before you eat the popcorn and candy. If you like to go out with your friend or loved one for lunch, then go out to lunch. Just remember to test your blood sugar and give yourself insulin before you eat. Your life shouldn't be any different in terms of what you do than it was before you were diagnosed. Live your life to the same as before just add diabetes to the mix and make it part of your daily living.
3) It's not as bad as it seems!
Diabetes has come so far from where it used to be that it's not as bad as it once was thought as. In the past, people thought you couldn't have anything that was considered "high in sugar" (ex. cookies, cake, pie, candy, etc.). In the past diabetes was looked at as a disease where you had to strictly watch what you ate and give up some of the "sweets" that you loved to eat. But, as technology and medicine improve over the years, people are starting to learn that almost every type of food has some amount of sugar that you are capable of covering with insulin. This eliminates the myth that you have to give up some of your favorite foods. With all of this new information figured out it shows that diabetes is not that hard to handle. As long as you give yourself insulin before you eat foods that have carbohydrate and test your blood sugar levels regulary then your fine. Diabetes is not a ugly monster that will ruin your life. It is just a disease that will be accompaning you wherever you go.
